Bespoke AI training or a course platform?
The short answer
The short answer
Buy a course platform when individuals want to learn on their own schedule and nobody is depending on a specific outcome. It is far cheaper per person, the content is usually good, and for a motivated individual it beats anything bespoke. Buy bespoke training when a team has to work differently afterwards, because that needs people in a room disagreeing about a real task from their own work. The mistake is buying seats for a hundred people and calling it a programme. What you have bought is a report showing how many of them logged in.
Why this comes up
The situation, before the answer
You have a budget for AI training and two options an order of magnitude apart in price.
The platform quote covers everyone. The bespoke quote covers one team.
Nobody has said what should be different afterwards, so both look defensible.
Your last company-wide course platform had a completion rate somebody has quietly stopped reporting.
Side by side
The comparison, on the dimensions that decide it
Shapes rather than figures. Salary bands, day rates and vendor prices move by an order of magnitude between markets, and a number here that you held us to would be worse than none.
| Dimension | Bespoke sessionsBuilt on your documents and tasks, live, for one team at a time. | A course platformSelf-paced video, per seat, everyone at once. | Platform plus one sessionLibrary for breadth, one live session for the team that matters. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost per person | High. It is a person in a room, and that does not scale. | Low, and this is a real advantage rather than a false economy. | Between the two, weighted towards the platform. |
| Uses your own work | Yes, and it is the entire reason to buy it. Exercises come from your documents. | No. Generic examples, well produced. | For the one team that gets the session. |
| People finish it | They are in the room, so yes. | Self-paced corporate completion is low, and the people who finish are the ones who needed it least. | Same split. |
| Changes how a team works together | Possible, because disagreement about a real task happens out loud. | Rarely. Individual learning does not redistribute how a team divides work. | For the team that got the session. |
| Breadth of subject | Narrow. One team, their tasks. | Very wide, and updated continuously. Genuinely hard to match. | Best of both, which is why this column exists. |
| Can you prove it worked | Yes, if somebody times real tasks before and four weeks after. Almost nobody asks for this. | Completion rates only, which measure logging in. | On the session, yes. On the library, no. |
Deciding
Which one, and when
Bespoke sessions
- One team has to work differently within six weeks.
- The work involves your own documents, contracts or data.
- Somebody will ask what changed, and you want a measured answer.
A course platform
- Individuals want to learn and nobody is depending on a specific outcome.
- The subject is general rather than specific to your systems.
- You need something available to everyone tomorrow at a known cost.
Platform plus one session
- You have a large organisation and one team where the money actually is.
- You want breadth cheaply and depth where it counts.
The limit
What this comparison gets wrong
We sell the first column and not the second, so discount accordingly. The honest position is that for a motivated individual a good course platform is better value than anything we sell, and we would say so on a call. This comparison also cannot see the thing that decides both outcomes: whether people have access to the tools on the Monday afterwards. Training somebody on a tool they cannot open is the most common preventable failure here, and it is an access problem rather than a training one.
